OTOPLASTY

Otoplasty is a surgery that seeks to resolve the size, shape or placement of the ears, whether they are very noticeable or not. The most common surgery performed on the ears is the one that corrects “flap ears.”

There are widespread complexes in men and women, such as protruding ears or protruding or protruding ears, which are suffered by around 5% of the population. These are no longer a problem without a solution, even if the idea of entering an operating room scares us.

The “flap ears” is more than just an aesthetic problem, it is also a social and self-esteem problem for which they have been the subject of jokes since childhood. Even in adults, if it is a complex that has already been assimilated, this procedure is frequently performed because it is a simple, quick solution with very few risks.

How is an Otoplasty carried out?

Depending on the age of the patient to be treated, the intervention can be performed under general or local anesthesia. The incision is made behind the ear, leaving a practically invisible scar. Through this incision, folding the cartilage in the appropriate places and removing an ellipse of skin, we are able to reshape the ear. It is sutured and a bandage is placed to model the ears so that they heal in the correct position. Once removed (a week later) the stitches are removed and an elastic band is placed for two weeks to prevent the ears from folding forward during sleep.

The result of the operation is permanent. A touch-up is rarely necessary and complications, whether skin or cartilage, are rare. When Otoplasty is performed by a qualified surgeon, complications are infrequent and minor. However, as in any other intervention, there are risks of surgery and complications of this procedure. A small percentage of patients may develop a hematoma, which dissolves spontaneously or requires drainage. Occasionally, an infection of the cartilage can occur that increases the scar tissue of the ear; its treatment consists of the administration of antibiotics; on rare occasions, surgical drainage may be necessary.
